IMAX has announced that there would be 25 minutes of the next Potter film, The Half-Blood Prince, in IMAX 3D. This is 8 minutes more than the 17 minutes of IMAX 3D in the previous Potter film, Order of the Phoenix. This announcement came in last month when Rich Gelfond, IMAX Co-Chairman and Co-CEO told shareholders that “we believe this film will include approximately 25 minutes in IMAX 3-D Split between the opening sequence and the finale.”

I saw the last HP in IMAX with the partial 3D and was very disappointed. To me, a good film will bring you into its world, and HP did that….
until I was rudely taken back into the real world with a flashing green light that told me to put on the 3D glasses. It took me about 3 seconds to put on the glasses, yet the light continued to flash for about a minute.
I was able to get back into the film until….
the red light telling me to take off the glasses came on. Again, it took mere seconds to remove the glasses, but the the light continued to flash.
Oh, and I was completely unimpressed by the 3D effects. 3D can really make a film, if it’s done right and is filmed specifically as a 3D movie like U2 3D was.
I want to see Half Blood Prince in IMAX…but am not looking forward to partial 3D. Yes, 3D is a draw to viewers, but the teaser from HP5 and Superman before that really fell flat.
